Viking Libra: First Hydrogen Cruise Ship Milestone
Viking has announced a major milestone in cruise ship innovation: the float out of the Viking Libra, the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship capable of operating with zero emissions.
The float out ceremony, held at the Fincantieri shipyard in Ancona, Italy, marks the first time the ship has touched water and signals the final stage of construction before interior work and sea trials begin.
A New Era of Environmentally Conscious Cruising
Scheduled for delivery in November 2026, the Viking Libra will be the most environmentally advanced ship in Viking’s fleet. Its hybrid propulsion system—powered in part by liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells—will allow the ship to operate with zero emissions in certain conditions. This technology could enable access to more environmentally sensitive destinations where traditional ships face restrictions.
The ship’s propulsion system is being developed in collaboration with Isotta Fraschini Motori, a subsidiary of Fincantieri specializing in advanced fuel cell technology.
What to Expect Onboard
Like the rest of Viking’s ocean fleet, the Viking Libra will be classified as a small ship, designed to offer a more intimate and culturally focused travel experience.
Key details include:
Approximately 54,300 gross tons
499 staterooms accommodating up to 998 guests
Scandinavian-inspired design and destination-focused itineraries
Following delivery, the Viking Libra is expected to spend her inaugural season sailing in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe, two regions known for their scenic coastlines and culturally rich ports.
Another Hydrogen-Powered Ship on the Way
Viking has also confirmed that a sister ship, the Viking Astrea, is currently under construction and scheduled for delivery in 2027. Like the Viking Libra, she will feature hydrogen-based propulsion and zero-emission capabilities.
Continued Recognition for Viking
This announcement comes as Viking continues to receive top industry recognition, including #1 rankings for both ocean and river cruises in the 2025 Readers’ Choice Awards from Condé Nast Traveler, along with multiple honors from Travel + Leisure and U.S. News & World Report.
Looking Ahead
The float out of the Viking Libra highlights a growing shift toward more sustainable cruising and represents a significant step forward in ship design and environmental innovation. As the ship moves into its final construction phase, more details about onboard experiences and inaugural itineraries are expected to be released in the coming months.
